Spencer Cliff
Biography
Spencer first trod the boards at the tender age of 13 in a production of Chess: The Musical (Townsville Choral Society), kickstarting his love affair with the arts. After performing professionally as a triple threat and instrumentalist during his high schooling years (Soloist - Carols by Candlelight; Jaffett - Noye’s Fludde for Australian Festival of Chamber Music, Understudy Algernon - The Importance of Being Earnest for TheatreiNQ) he attended the Queensland Conservatorium of Music’s Bachelor of Musical Theatre program at 17 years old.
After his first year of study, he sustained an injury that forced him to change tack and he went on to pursue his other love - languages. While at the Australian National University studying a language and linguistics degree, Spencer played the titular role in Sweeney Todd (Interhall Productions), a role for which he won Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical at the 2016 Canberra Area Theatre awards. He went on to make his directorial debut the following year in Into the Woods (Interhall Productions), where he was nominated for Best Director and the show for Best Musical. Other credits include Ensemble in Ruddigore for Opera Queensland and Musical Director/Möbius in The Physicists for NUTS.
After a nearly a decade of managing restaurants and wine programs as a sommelier across some of Australia’s top hospitality venues, Spencer has decided to come back to his first love full-time and is delighted to mark his return to professional performance in 2024.
