Sam Hocking
Biography
Sam believes in the fundamental importance of ‘play’ within acting and performance. His favourite quote by Education Authors Roy, Baker & Hamilton; ‘The notion of ‘play’ as allowing a sense of freedom for children to explore their environments is a core educational concept, though the valuing of it as such is often diminished’ carries heavily within any creative practice. With use of the Stanislavski Method of acting, Sam has discovered through his practice that by repositioning his own reality and delving into his character’s circumstances through the simple act of ‘play’, he is better able to bring forth the integral authenticity each character deserves.
Since graduating from Queensland TAFE with an Advanced Diploma of Arts (Acting) and Queensland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drama), Sam has worked with several theatre companies as an actor and collaborator. In 2021, he was nominated for a Gold Palm Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as ‘Helena/ Helenus’ in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

While Ned Weeks is passionate and loud, Bruce Niles is his opposite. Niles, played by Sam Hocking, is the rational voice of reason to Ned’s unbridled passion. Hocking harnesses the challenges of the character beautifully. He delivers moments of clear, calm reasoning amid a sea of chaos and leads his character through the emotional minefield of this piece with precision.

Sam Hocking brilliantly captures the complexity of Bruce, the former Green Beret and closeted city banker whose looks have always helped him get what he wants.

Hocking’s portrayal of Bruce was stoic and stubborn, creating an interesting dynamic with Ned in an almost frenemy type relationship.
