Doll Hunt

Actor/Writer/Musician

Born in the U.K. raised in Australia. Both as an actor and a musician Doll has achieved and accumulated a wealth of experience, training and credible work nationally and internationally.

Biography

Doll Hunt shines in his portrayal of Pete/Neil/John, showcasing a range of emotions from nervous anxiety to frazzled charm. His scenes as Pete are often a mix of subtle humour and underlying tension, especially during a moment where Pete awkwardly confides in a stranger at a bar, humorously unaware that this stranger has just had an affair with his wife. Hunt captures Pete's loveable cluelessness and his longing for connection with endearing sincerity. As Neil in Act 2, Hunt depicts a lovelorn man consumed by his lost love with vulnerability. His performance, reminiscent of Martin Short in its quirky nature, brings a delicate sensitivity that elicits both pity and empathy. And if that wasn't enough, Hunt takes on a THIRD role as John, the husband of the missing woman Valerie. This character is different yet again, showcasing a raw and powerful display of grief and guilt. He captures John’s anguish as he recounts his story to the policeman and questions whether his silence and inaction may have contributed to Valerie's fate.

‘Doll Hunt and James Dyke were particularly good at finding the comedic moments, which in life, often spring from the most dramatic. Their scene in the bar was an Act One highlight.’

Doll Hunt is an Actor/Writer and Musician. From an early age he developed a love for music which he has carried throughout his professional life. It wasn’t until he found his passion for acting in his twenties that started another life-long exploration onto another stage. Notably in that time, his theatre performances in ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’ (Brisbane) and ‘Freedom of the City’ (Melbourne) were highlights. In 2003 he left for the U.K where he continued to train and perform as an actor with one of his career highlights being involved in a successful off West End production of ‘Hamlet’ as well as various feature and short film projects.

In 2013 he returned to Brisbane deciding to focus on another career. He stopped performing for a number of years but soon realised he couldn’t ignore the calling any longer. Doll stepped back into his love of acting/music again and hasn’t looked back.

Between 2020-2023 he achieved some considerable credits including six Griffith Graduation Short Films, bit parts on ‘Elvis’, ‘Joe Vs Carole’, ‘Boy Swallows Universe’ and two Independent Short Films. This is his second production for Ad Astra.

Reviews

“Doll Hunt was utterly believable as the brilliant yet slightly unstable Robert, whose love for his daughter was not quite enough to hold his illness at bay. The transition between Robert in moments of lucidity and moments where he succumbed to his rapidly declining mental health was quietly heart-breaking, and Hunt played both versions of Robert with earnest sincerity and care.”

“Doll Hunt is the heartbreaking father, Robert. Hunt’s performance is so haunting you can feel the audience choke up towards his ultimate demise. Especially during Hunt’s final scene where his rambling comes back after 9 months of lucidity. As the light flickers out on Robert’s life it is hard not to feel for all the characters in this production and that is a true testament to the wonderful acting by Hunt.”

“Robert is played by Doll Hunt, a musician and actor who has only recently returned to the theatre. His performance leaves you wanting to see more of his calm confidence and warmth on stage.”

Doll Hunt's portrayal of Zach, the director orchestrating the auditions, is palpable. Even though he spends much of the show standing at the back of the theatre, his commanding presence is noticeable. His voice fills the space, prompting the cast to project their performances to the upper back of the audience. He guides the dancers through their paces and occasionally steps forward into the light to heighten the drama of key moments. Despite his physical separation, Hunt’s portrayal of Zach is intimate, revealing his deep understanding of dancers' aspirations and vulnerabilities.

“Hunt also gives a nuanced performance, heartbreakingly so in Robert’s devastating dishevelled final appearance writing furiously outside in the cold (in what is revealed to be the nonsensical rambling of a deteriorating mind), towards his final light’s dim.”

“Casting Doll Hunt as the alternate Soccer Mom, is a fleet-footed manoeuvre that shows dedication to innovation. Doll only has a short time on stage, but he creates a captivating scene that brings everyone together, including the audience, for a dramatic concluding moment.”
