Tom Coyle
Biography
After 30 years as Bass Trombonist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Tom changed his performance focus to acting. Recent productions include Death and the Maiden and God of Carnage (Ad Astra), Ibsen’s Ghosts (The Curators), and Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth (Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble). He also appeared in a rehearsed reading of Jordan Tannahill’s Late Company, as Michael Shaun-Hastings alongside Christen O’Leary, Zoe Houghton, and Chris Sommers.
Tom has undertaken acting classes through NIDA, La Boite, Matrix Theatre, ARC, Peter Rasmussen, The fACTory, and The Warehouse. At the start of 2018, he ceased working with the QSO in order to concentrate on acting full-time. In addition to his theatre work, Tom has appeared in numerous short films, TV and film productions.
His venture into acting marks another stage in a varied and eclectic educational journey. His first university degree was in Environmental Science with a Mathematics major. He has since studied English Literature at UQ and completed two post-graduate degrees in Music. Over the years he has taught at UQ, Griffith, USQ, and QUT in music, maths, and computing, including nearly 20 years as Lecturer of Trombone at the Queensland Conservatorium.
Tom was also the manager and co-artistic director of the contemporary chamber music series, A Musical Asylum. This series ran for five years and commissioned numerous new compositions as well as performing many world and Australian premieres, and was broadcast regularly on ABC-FM.
Tom has also served as Queensland Vice-President of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance and the Federal Executive of the Symphony Orchestra Musicians Association

Reviews
Coyle anchors things as the shop’s long-suffering co-operator, all about making deals but also committed to the shop and its customers. The subtlety of his vocal delivery adds much to the script’s comedy, meaning that he can make even ordering a kebab funny.

Knoll was portrayed by Tom Coyle, who is given the most comedic material. His physical comedic timing was excellent.

Tom Coyle was brilliant in the role of Knoll, hilariously ricocheting between well-intentioned advice, oblivious enthusiasm, and spiralling conspiracy.

Tom Coyle is utterly convincing as Schmidt’s Pawn and Laundry long-suffering co-operator, Knoll. This is a great comic performance by Tom, who I’ve seen in several Ad Astra productions. This is his best role yet. His character leaves you guessing – does he know more than he is revealing about the disappearance of his business partner, TJ’s Dad? Or is he really more concerned about the local kebab shop getting his ‘usual’ order right? There is a great gag about Knoll’s vinyl collection too. He is a unique comic character.

Tom Coyle is terrific as the initially amiable Michael, especially as his sentiment changes to one characterised by snide, uncouth comments.

Coyle's characters' snide commentaries on the subject of discussion were such a delight and quite often had me shrieking in laughter.
